Abstract

Matters related to predestination are found in the Bible and often give rise to many questions and related theological issues. One of these appears in Gospel of John 17:12, which states, “the one who was destined to perish.” In this regard, predestination becomes an important subject for theological discussion. The assumption that everything has been determined by God in divine election has led certain groups of believers to conclude that evangelism is no longer necessary. Therefore, this study aims to determine the meaning of the phrase “the one who was destined to perish” in John 17:12. This research employs an exegetical method in analyzing the interpreted text. The results of the study indicate that the phrase does not necessarily support the mistaken view of God as an evil being who determines the ultimate fate of human life. Rather, it points to God’s foreknowledge and human freedom to choose. In this case, Judas Iscariot is still regarded as personally responsible for his actions, which led him into eternal destruction. Conversely, salvation remains available to those who believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and personal Savior.
